Tip
Sheet for Basketball Fundamentals
DRIBBLING
- Push ball with fingers
not palm of hand. Do not just slap at ball.
- Maximize the amount
of time the hand is in contact with the ball for greater control.
- Keep your head up.
Eyes looking forward.
- Keep the dribble
low, Dribble at a level between the knees and waist.
- Protect the ball
by keeping your body between the defender and the ball.
- Practice using either
hand
- Keep your elbow
close to your body.
PASSING
- Crisp Two Handed
Pass
- Elbows in and snap
wrists outward, Thumbs down
- Step and Pass to
Target. Hit the receiver in their hands at chest level.
- Throw away from
the defender
- Step to ReceiveTypes
of passes: Chest pass, bounce pass, overhead and baseball pass.
- Receiver of pass
should move to the ball, give a target, have soft hands.
Shooting
Layups
- Off the backboard.
Jump off the left foot for right hand layups,off the right foot for
left hand layups.
- Jump Shot
- Keep eyes on target
over the front of the rim
- Keep elbow in, should
be in line with your lead foot, arm goes up with elbow above eye.
- Wrist goes back,
release ball up not out, Using wrist, release ball off finger tips.
- Follow-through
Rebounding
- Block out your man
(Be between your man and the basket)
- Flex your knees
- Keep your eye on
the ball
- The missed shot
will usually bounce back towards the shooter
- Rebound high, two
hand on ball. Protect the ball.
Team Offense
- Have your hands
ready to receive the ball
- Always square up
and be in triple threat position. (Dribble, Shoot, Pass)
- Always see the ball.
- Dont force
shots or passes.
- Put offensive rebounds
right back up.
Team Defense
- See your man and
ball at all times.
- Always keep yourself
between your man and the basket.
- Keep your hands
up.
- Step and slide,
never cross legs when running.
- Be aggressive, go
for steals, anticipate passes, play passing lanes.
- Zone Defense
- Move towards the
ball
- Stay in your zone

BASKETBALL DRILLS
Running Drills
- Jog around the gym
3 times
Wind sprints in 4 lines, down the gym and back.
- Run down to foul
line, touch ground, run back and touch ground, repeat to half
Court and back.
- Relay races
- Defense step and
slide drill.
Dribbling Drills
- Dribbling in place,
left and right hands, also with eyes closed.
Dribble entire length of court using right hand and back with left hand.
- Dribble through
cones, chairs or kids. Use outside hand and switch hands.
- One on One dribbling
protect ball against defensive player.
- Team relay races.
Dribble down with right, back with left pass to next player.
Relay races through cones.
- Dribbling contests.
Figure 8s, through the legs, crossovers, behind the back.
- Dribble Tag- Everyone
dribbles a ball and tries to tag another dribbler. Must be in control of ball when making tag.
Passing Drills
- Two lines pass across
to next player. Chest and bounce passes.
- Relay race passing
down the lines to next player. Chest and bounce passes
- Chest Pass against
a wall. Most passes and catches in 15 seconds.
On the run- Two players dribble and pass the entire length of court.
Try with and without dribbling. Only one step and one dribble allowed
before a pass.
- Team relay races.
2 man passing down and back.
- Monkey in the middle-
12 foot square. The monkey tries to intercept or force a ad pass. Whoever
makes the mistake is the new monkey.
- Give and Go passing
drill. 2 lines at half court and 1 line at sideline. From Half court
pass to teammate at top of key. Cut to basket, receive pass and attempt
layup.
- Everyone in circle.
Pass to coach in middle of circle. Chest and bounce pass.
- Everyone in circle.
Players run around circle and pass to coach in middle.
- Three-man weave-
Go the length of the court. The player passing the ball runs toward
and behind the receiver.
- Two teams with passing
only. No shooting or dribbling. Just defense and passing.
Shooting Drills
- Two line lay-up
drill. One team makes lay-ups the other gets the rebound then switch.
- From halfcourt,
two lines make three passes and then make lay-ups.
- 30 seconds, 2 players
attempt to make the most lay-ups.
- 2 teams, with 1
lay-up line on each half court. Each team tries to make most lay-ups.
- 2 teams try and
make the most foul shots.
- Teams in semicircle
and try to make the most outside shots.
Defensive Drills
- Set-up several lines
and do a step and slide drill
- One on One guard
the dribbler.
- Two on Two keep
yourself between man and basket.
Two on one and 3 on two full court defense drills.
- Zone defense drills
2-1-2 move as ball moves around.
